Arcliner TO 110 Vacuum Closure Gasket Compound
A gasket compound for lug and press-on twist-off metal caps on glass jars, which flows into the glass finish under the capping head to form a vacuum seal and releases cleanly when the consumer twists. Retention of removal torque over shelf life is the property on which the grade is specified.

1. Product description
A gasket compound for lug and press-on twist-off metal caps on glass jars, where the closure holds a vacuum rather than a pressure. The compound must flow into the glass finish under the capping head to form the vacuum seal, hold that vacuum through pasteurisation or retort, and then release cleanly when the consumer twists, which is a balance rather than a maximum. Torque retention over shelf life is the property that separates this grade from a general-purpose gasket: removal torque that climbs or collapses over months is a reject even when the pack is still sealed.
2. Features
- Flows into the glass finish under steam-vacuum capping to form the vacuum seal
- Holds residual vacuum through tunnel pasteurisation or retort of the filled pack
- Specified on retention of removal torque over shelf life, since torque that climbs or collapses over months is a reject even on a sealed pack
- Ring gasket for lug caps and full-panel deposit for press-on twist-off caps, where the glass finish impresses the thread into the compound
- Available as a plastisol or as a PVC-free thermoplastic elastomer; regulatory declaration issued on request against the product supplied
3. Recommended uses
Lug and press-on twist-off caps in lacquered tinplate and steel on glass jars for preserves, sauces, baby food, pickles and fatty or oily fillings. Suited to steam-vacuum capped packs that are tunnel pasteurised or retorted after capping. For fatty and oily fillings the compound route, plastisol or PVC-free thermoplastic elastomer, is agreed with the packer before qualification.
Substrates. Lacquered tinplate and steel lug or press-on twist-off shells, sealing against glass jar finishes for preserves, sauces, baby food, pickles and fatty or oily fillings.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | PVC plastisol for flow-and-gel lining, or PVC-free thermoplastic elastomer for in-shell moulding; no volatile carrier | Formulation |
| Appearance as supplied | Opaque viscous paste (flow-and-gel grade) or granules for melt dosing (moulding grade) | Visual |
| Hardness, Shore A, of the compound gelled or moulded as a test piece under lining conditions | 35 to 60, the softer end of the Arcliner range as typical for twist-off closures | ISO 868, test piece at least 4 mm thick, plied if necessary |
| Density of the gelled or moulded compound | 0.88 to 1.40 g/cm3; thermoplastic elastomer route at the lower end, filled plastisol at the upper end | ISO 1183-1 |
| Viscosity of the flowable grade, Brookfield | 8,000 to 30,000 mPa.s | ISO 2555 |
| Melt flow rate of the moulding grade, 190 C / 2.16 kg | 8 to 40 g/10 min | ISO 1133-1 |
| Compression set, 22 h at 70 C | 15 to 40 % | ISO 815-1 |
| Removal torque as a proportion of application torque after conditioning | 60 to 110 %; values above 100 % are normal on vacuum packs, where the vacuum adds to the load | ASTM D3198 |
| Residual vacuum retained after capping and heat process | 250 to 600 mbar below atmospheric, target set by the packer | in-house, pack gauge |
| Sensory and taint rating of the packed product | 0 to 1 on the 0 to 4 scale | DIN 10955 |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Lining method | Flowed and gelled, or moulded in the shell, on rotary lining machines: a ring gasket for lug caps and a full-panel deposit for press-on twist-off caps |
| Shell and container preparation | Clean shells with sound interior lacquer on the sealing face; glass finishes checked for chipping and out-of-round, which are frequent causes of leaks attributed to the compound |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; not to be thinned |
| Deposit weight | 0.9 to 2.2 g per shell according to diameter; press-on twist-off deposits carry enough compound on the skirt to take the impressed thread |
| Gelation or moulding schedule | Plastisol gelled at 180 to 210 C oven air, with dwell set by the oven and the shell mass; moulding grade formed at 150 to 200 C melt against a tool held well below the melt temperature |
| Capping | Steam-vacuum capping; application torque, head pressure and headspace steam are recorded, since a change on the capper shows as torque or vacuum drift weeks later |
| Heat process | Tunnel pasteurisation at 60 to 85 C for 10 to 40 min according to the product, or, for retortable grades, retort at 121 C for 15 to 40 min under the overpressure set by the packer to keep the cap seated, followed by controlled cooling |
Process. Flowed and gelled, or moulded, on rotary lining machines: as a ring gasket for lug caps, and as a full-panel deposit for press-on twist-off caps, where the thread is impressed into the compound by the glass finish. Applied by steam-vacuum capping, followed by tunnel pasteurisation or retort.
6. Storage and handling
Store in closed original containers in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight; homogenise the flowable grade before use and keep the moulding grade dry. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis, and handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
