Arcveil CD 110 Inkjet-Writable Coding Varnish
A full-sheet varnish that gives a receptive surface for inkjet coding and encoding, so that batch codes, dates and variable data print with sharp edges and fix fast enough to be smear-free at the first nip, turn bar or stacker. It is specified on code legibility and matched to the coding technology and ink chemistry in use.

1. Product description
A full-sheet varnish that gives a receptive surface for inkjet coding and encoding, so that batch codes, dates and variable data print with sharp edges and no feathering. It is formulated to fix the code fast enough for the line, so that the print is smear-free at the first nip, turn bar or stacker. Unlike the other Arcveil grades it is applied over the whole sheet rather than as a panel, and it is specified on code legibility rather than on concealment.
2. Features
- Receptive surface matched to thermal drop-on-demand, piezo drop-on-demand or continuous inkjet
- Sharp code edges without feathering
- Code fix set to the line speed and the distance from coder to first nip
- Applied over the whole sheet, including sheets already carrying a printed design
- Linear barcodes and 2D symbols graded to ISO/IEC 15416 or ISO/IEC 15415
3. Recommended uses
Batch codes, dates and variable data on cartons, labels and printed paper and board sheets coded in-line or at the packing line. Filmic substrates are assessed individually for wetting and code fix.
Substrates. Coated and uncoated paper and board, carton board and label stock, including sheets already carrying a printed design. Filmic substrates are assessed individually for wetting and code fix.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Water-based inkjet-receptive varnish | Formulation |
| Appearance | Liquid varnish, drying to a continuous film over the whole sheet; gloss and clarity agreed at the trial | Visual |
| Carrier | Water | By formulation |
| Supply viscosity | 30 to 40 s, 4 mm flow cup at 23 degrees C | ISO 2431 |
| Non-volatile content | 35 to 45 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Density at 23 degrees C | 1.00 to 1.15 g/cm3 | ISO 2811-1 |
| pH | 7.5 to 9.5 | ASTM E70 |
| Code edge definition | Sharp edges with no feathering on the agreed coding technology and ink | Visual on trial sheets, customer or supplier protocol |
| Time to smear-free | Code smear-free at the first nip, turn bar or stacker at the actual line speed | Rub check on trial sheets at line speed, customer or supplier protocol |
| Coded symbol quality | Grade 1.5 or better at the agreed aperture and wavelength, confirmed on the trial sheets | ISO/IEC 15416 for linear barcodes, ISO/IEC 15415 for 2D symbols |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Method | Offset coater unit, flexo coating unit or gravure station, in-line |
| Surface preparation | Coated or uncoated paper and board, carton board and label stock used as supplied; any printed design dry before varnishing |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; if needed, adjust with water only to the press viscosity set on the trial |
| Applied coat weight | 1.0 to 4.0 g/m2 dry, giving a dry film thickness of 1 to 4 micrometres (ISO 2808) |
| Drying | Hot-air drying in-line, with temperature and dwell set on the press trial |
| Coding technology | Grade matched to one coder type, thermal drop-on-demand, piezo drop-on-demand or continuous inkjet, and to its ink chemistry; the same varnish does not serve all three |
| Acceptance | Edge definition, feathering and time to smear-free tested at line speed and coder-to-nip distance; barcodes and 2D symbols graded on the trial sheets |
Process. Offset coater unit, flexo coating unit or gravure station in-line, followed by hot-air drying. The grade is matched to the coding technology in use, whether thermal drop-on-demand, piezo drop-on-demand or continuous inkjet, and to the ink chemistry those systems carry.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed container at moderate temperature, protected from frost and direct sunlight; shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
