Arcveil SO 220 Opaque Scratch-Off Layer

A heavily pigmented opaque scratch layer printed in two passes over Arcveil SO 110 to conceal variable data under transmitted light and to come away cleanly under a coin. It cannot be run without the undercoat and is quoted and qualified with it as a matched pair.

1. Product description

A heavily pigmented opaque top layer printed over Arcveil SO 110, applied in two passes to build the coat weight the panel needs. It is specified on read-through under transmitted light, on clean and complete removal under a coin, and on comparative resistance to solvent rubbing and to mechanical lifting, measured as a bench check to a stated procedure rather than as a security rating. It carries the higher film build of the pair and cannot be run without the undercoat.

2. Features

  • Specified on read-through under transmitted light, supported for white and light-coloured grades by a contrast ratio of 0.97 to 0.99
  • Complete removal under a coin over the matched undercoat
  • Comparative bench checks against solvent rubbing and mechanical lifting, not a security rating
  • Water-based for flexo; water-based or ultraviolet-curing for rotary screen
  • Built to 8 to 16 g/m2 dry over two passes

3. Recommended uses

Opaque scratch-off panels on telecom recharge and airtime cards, promotional game cards and similar paper and board items, always printed over Arcveil SO 110. Where an end use is audited, for example lottery, gaming or high-value documents, the issuing authority sets the test and acceptance level, and Arctic holds no security accreditation.

Substrates. The same paper and board grades as Arcveil SO 110, applied over a fully covered undercoat panel. It is not specified for direct application to filmic facestock.

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
MethodTwo passes on a flexo coating unit with chambered doctor blade and anilox, or on rotary screen where a heavier deposit is wanted
Surface preparationOver a fully covered, dry Arcveil SO 110 panel that is at least as large as the scratch layer and in register with it; not specified for direct application to filmic facestock
DilutionStir to uniform before use; water-based grades adjusted with water only to the press viscosity set on the trial; the ultraviolet-curing grade is not diluted
Applied coat weight8 to 16 g/m2 dry over two passes, equivalent to a dry film thickness of about 5 to 12 micrometres (ISO 2808); too little reads through, too much becomes brittle and powders under the coin
Drying or cureFull interstation hot-air drying or ultraviolet cure between passes, so the second pass does not soften the first; conditions set on the press trial
ChecksRead-through and coin removal on the trial sheets and then on every run
Finished sheets and reelsStacking, winding and reel storage agreed on the press trial so that the panels do not block

Process. Two passes on a flexo coating unit with a chambered doctor blade and anilox, or rotary screen where a heavier deposit is wanted, supplied water-based for flexo and water-based or ultraviolet-curing for screen. Full interstation drying or curing between passes. Panel read-through and coin removal are checked on the trial sheets.

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed container at moderate temperature, with water-based grades protected from frost and the ultraviolet-curing grade protected from light; shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
