Arcveil SO 110 Scratch-Off Release Undercoat
A low-build water-based release undercoat printed over the concealed data and under Arcveil SO 220, where it sets the release level of the scratch-off panel. It is not a stand-alone coating and is always specified and qualified together with Arcveil SO 220.

1. Product description
A low-build water-based undercoat printed over the concealed data and under the scratch layer, where it sets the release level of the panel. It protects the underlying variable print from the coin and controls whether the top layer lifts as a clean flake or smears. It is the lower film build of the pair and is not a stand-alone coating: it is always specified with Arcveil SO 220.
2. Features
- Sets the release level so the scratch layer lifts as a clean flake rather than smearing
- Protects the concealed variable print from the coin during removal
- Matched to the imaging method of the concealed data: toner, thermal transfer or inkjet
- Low film build of 1.5 to 3.0 g/m2 dry
- Quoted and qualified as a matched pair with Arcveil SO 220
3. Recommended uses
Scratch-off panels on telecom recharge and airtime cards, promotional game cards and similar variable-data panels on paper and board. Lottery, gaming and high-value document work falls under the issuing authority's own qualification regime, and Arctic holds no security accreditation.
Substrates. Coated and uncoated paper and board, cast-coated and one-side-coated board, label paper and card used for recharge and promotional panels. The concealed data is normally toner, thermal-transfer or inkjet print, and the undercoat is matched to that print.
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Water-based release varnish on a polymer dispersion binder | Formulation |
| Appearance | Low-viscosity liquid, drying to a thin continuous film over the concealed data | Visual |
| Carrier | Water | By formulation |
| Supply viscosity | 30 to 40 s, 4 mm flow cup at 23 degrees C | ISO 2431 |
| Non-volatile content | 35 to 45 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Density at 23 degrees C | 1.00 to 1.15 g/cm3 | ISO 2811-1 |
| pH | 7.5 to 9.5 | ASTM E70 |
| Adhesion on paper and board | No pick on tape removal | Tape pick and rub, in-house |
| Release behaviour under Arcveil SO 220 | Scratch layer removed completely under normal coin pressure, with no smearing, no residue in the panel and no damage to the print underneath | Coin test on trial sheets, in-house |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Method | Flexo coating unit with chambered doctor blade and anilox, in-line on a narrow-web or sheet-fed line, or a gravure coating station |
| Surface preparation | Concealed data fully imaged and dry before coating; the undercoat grade is matched to the imaging method (toner, thermal transfer or inkjet) |
| Panel layout | Full, unbroken panel at least as large as the scratch layer and in register with it, so that no scratch layer reaches the substrate directly |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for use; if needed, adjust with water only to the press viscosity set on the trial |
| Applied coat weight | 1.5 to 3.0 g/m2 dry, giving a dry film thickness of 1 to 3 micrometres (ISO 2808) |
| Drying | Hot-air drying between units, fully dry before the scratch layer is applied; temperature and dwell set on the press trial |
| Next step | Overprint with Arcveil SO 220 in two passes; a press trial on the customer's own substrate and imaging method is required |
Process. Flexo coating unit with a chambered doctor blade and anilox, in-line on a narrow-web or sheet-fed line, or a gravure coating station. Hot-air drying between units. A press trial on the customer’s own substrate and imaging method is required.
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed container at moderate temperature, protected from frost and direct sunlight; shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handling guidance is given in the Safety Data Sheet, issued on request. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
