Arcfibre MB 650 Heat-Sealable Moisture Barrier Coating

A heat-sealable version of the Arcfibre moisture barrier, giving a coating-to-coating or coating-to-board seal on cup seaming, tray lidding and wrap closing equipment alongside the barrier performance of MB 610. Seal conditions are set on the customer machine and seal strength is confirmed on the finished structure to ASTM F88.

1. Product description

A heat-sealable version of the moisture barrier, giving a coating-to-coating or coating-to-board seal on cup seaming, tray lidding and wrap closing equipment as well as the barrier performance of MB 610. Seal initiation temperature, dwell and jaw pressure are all set on the customer machine, and seal strength is confirmed on the finished structure to ASTM F88. Blocking in the reel or the stack is the usual constraint on a sealable coating, so reel tension, stack height and storage temperature should be agreed before a full run.

2. Features

  • Coating-to-coating or coating-to-board heat seal
  • Moisture barrier performance of MB 610
  • Seal strength confirmed on the finished structure to ASTM F88
  • Blocking controlled by agreed reel tension, stack height and storage temperature

3. Recommended uses

Cup side seams, tray lidding and wrap closures on cup and tray board, lidding and wrap paper and food-service board, where a heat-sealed fibre-based structure is being developed in place of extruded polyethylene.

Substrates. Cup and tray board, lidding and wrap paper, food-service board

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodFlexo, gravure or blade coater
Surface preparationRecord the base board Cobb value or sizing level; the sealing layer must be continuous across the seal area
DilutionSupplied ready for use; dilution reduces barrier and seal, so adjust film build by anilox volume or pass count rather than by adding water
Applied dry coat weight6 to 14 g per square metre, by grammage difference to ISO 536, often in two passes
DryingHot air and IR to full dryness, with the web cooled before rewind or stacking, as a warm sealable film blocks in the reel even when dry; reel tension and stack height as agreed
Next stepHeat sealing on the converter's forming, seaming or lidding line, with seal initiation temperature, dwell and jaw pressure set on that machine
Handling and safetyRefer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request.

Process. Flexo, gravure or blade coater, hot air and IR drying, followed by heat sealing on the converter’s forming, seaming or lidding line

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed container at 5 to 30 degrees C, protected from frost and direct heat, and stir gently before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.

The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
