Arcfibre GB 510 Grease and Oil Barrier Coating
A water-based grease and oil barrier coating for fibre-based food service, screened by the KIT test to TAPPI T559 and targeting the mid KIT band at the lower coat weight of its subfamily. It is used for ambient and warm dry foods such as baked goods, wraps and box liners.

1. Product description
A water-based grease and oil barrier for fibre-based food service, applied on flexo or a coater and screened by the KIT test to TAPPI T559. It targets the mid KIT band and is the lower coat weight option of the subfamily, used for ambient and warm dry foods such as baked goods, wraps and box liners. KIT is a room-temperature screening test with a graded castor oil, toluene and heptane series, so it ranks grease resistance but does not predict behaviour against hot oil. Grease resistance depends on continuous coverage, so an absorbent or rough base board will need a higher coat weight or a second pass.
2. Features
- Mid-band KIT rating at lower coat weight
- Applied by flexo, gravure, blade coater, size press or spray on moulded fibre
- Single or double pass, second pass on absorbent or rough board
- Regulatory declaration issued on request against the product supplied
3. Recommended uses
Grease resistance on bakery packaging, wraps, box liners and food-service board for ambient and warm dry foods. Oily, fatty and fried food applications are the field of GB 550.
Substrates. Food-service board, greaseproof and kraft paper, cup and tray board, and moulded fibre parts where the coating is spray applied
4. Typical properties
| Property | Typical value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Water-based polymer dispersion grease and oil barrier | Formulation |
| Appearance | White liquid drying to a transparent to translucent film | Visual assessment, supplier protocol |
| Carrier | Water | By formulation |
| Non-volatile content | 35 to 45 per cent by weight | ISO 3251 |
| Flow time, 4 mm flow cup at 20 degrees C | 30 to 45 seconds | ISO 2431 |
| pH at 20 degrees C | 7.5 to 9.0 | ISO 976 |
| Grease resistance, KIT rating | 6 to 9, room-temperature screening test only, measured on the formed part | TAPPI T559 |
| Hot oil and hot grease resistance | Not predicted by KIT; qualified by a hold test at the actual food contact temperature and time | Customer or supplier protocol |
| Film continuity | Continuous, pinhole-free coverage required, checked on the formed part after creasing and forming | Customer or supplier protocol |
Typical values, not a specification. Values for each batch are given on its Certificate of Analysis.
5. Application
| Parameter | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Application method | Flexo, gravure or blade coater at the converter, size press at the base-paper mill, or spray on formed moulded fibre |
| Surface preparation | Base board sizing and absorbency set the coat weight; an absorbent or rough board needs a higher coat weight or a second pass |
| Dilution | Supplied ready for flexo, gravure and blade application; water additions lower the dry coat weight laid per pass and increase penetration into the sheet, so hold film build by anilox volume or pass count. For size press and for spray application on moulded fibre, the dilution is set on trial against the target dry coat weight. |
| Applied dry coat weight | 3 to 6 g per square metre, by grammage difference to ISO 536, in one or two passes |
| Drying | Hot air and IR, each pass dried before the next |
| Next step | Creasing, die cutting and forming; KIT is confirmed on the formed part, as converting stresses the film |
| Handling and safety | Refer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request. |
Process. Flexo, gravure or blade coater at the converter, size press at the base-paper mill, or spray application on formed moulded fibre, single or double pass, hot air and IR drying
6. Storage and handling
Store in the original closed container at 5 to 30 degrees C, protected from frost and direct heat, and stir gently before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.
7. Safety and regulatory information
Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
This Technical Data Sheet is published for on-screen reference. The information is given in good faith from laboratory and application experience and describes typical values; it is not a specification and does not replace a trial on your own substrate and line.
