1. Product description

A water-based low-gloss overprint varnish for sheet-fed offset coaters, giving a satin to matt sheen with the rub protection of a gloss varnish. It is the adjustable grade of the subfamily, sitting in the mid sheen band where most commercial matt work is specified. Where a deeper, flatter finish is wanted, OM 240 goes further down the gloss scale.

2. Features

  • Satin to matt sheen in the mid gloss band
  • Rub protection retained at low gloss
  • Dry hand feel on coated and uncoated stock
  • Runs inline or offline on roller and chambered blade coaters

3. Recommended uses

Satin and matt finishing of commercial sheet-fed offset print, folding boxboard cartons and recycled-content board where a controlled sheen is specified. Where a flatter, dull-matt finish is wanted, OM 240 is the next grade.

Substrates. Coated and uncoated offset paper and board, folding boxboard, recycled-content board

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodRoller or chambered doctor blade coating unit inline on a sheet-fed offset press, or an offline coater
Surface preparationInline, the varnish goes on wet over freshly printed offset ink in the same pass; heavy solids and unset ink films slow the varnish and can shift sheen and rub, so hold ink film weight constant. Offline, apply once the ink has set.
DilutionStir before use to keep the matting agent evenly dispersed; adjust viscosity at the coater with 0 to 5 per cent water by weight
Applied dry coat weight2 to 4 g per square metre, by grammage difference to ISO 536; hold coat weight constant through the run, as sheen changes with film build
DryingIR and hot air; control delivery-pile temperature and stack height to prevent blocking and marking
Next stepCutting, creasing and carton folding once the pile has cooled
Handling and safetyRefer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request.

Process. Roller or chambered doctor blade coater inline on a sheet-fed offset press, or an offline coater, with IR and hot air drying

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed container at 5 to 30 degrees C, protected from frost and direct heat, and stir before use to redisperse the matting agent. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
