Arcfibre OG 140 High-Gloss Overprint Varnish

A higher-solids water-based overprint varnish for sheet-fed offset coaters, formulated for gloss build on closed, well sized coated stock. It carries more dry film than OG 110 at the same anilox volume and holds it on the surface of the sheet rather than losing it into the board.

1. Product description

A higher-solids sheet-fed overprint varnish formulated for maximum gloss build on closed, well sized coated stock. It carries more dry film at the same anilox volume and holds it on the surface rather than losing it into the sheet, which is what produces the gloss. It is the high-gloss option of the subfamily and needs a coated substrate and adequate drying to reach its window, so it is not the grade for absorbent uncoated board.

2. Features

  • Higher solids for more dry film at the same anilox volume
  • Gloss build on coated art, cast-coated and well sized board
  • Film held on the surface rather than absorbed into the sheet
  • Needs a coated substrate and adequate drying to reach its gloss window

3. Recommended uses

High-gloss finishing of commercial print, covers and folding cartons on coated art paper and board, cast-coated board and well sized folding boxboard. It is not the grade for absorbent uncoated board, where OG 110 is used.

Substrates. Coated art paper and board, cast-coated board, well sized folding boxboard

5. Application

ParameterGuidance
Application methodChambered doctor blade coating unit inline on a sheet-fed offset press at higher anilox volume
Surface preparationClosed, well sized coated stock. Inline, the varnish goes on wet over freshly printed offset ink; heavy solids and unset ink films slow it and reduce gloss, so hold ink film weight constant. Absorbent uncoated board will not reach the gloss window.
DilutionSupplied ready for use; dilution lowers solids and gloss, so hold viscosity at the coater with 0 to 3 per cent water by weight
Applied dry coat weight3 to 5 g per square metre, by grammage difference to ISO 536
DryingIR and hot air sized for the higher film build; control delivery-pile temperature and stack height to prevent blocking and marking
Next stepCutting, creasing and carton folding once the pile has cooled; keep glue flaps free of varnish unless glue adhesion over the varnish has been confirmed on trial
Handling and safetyRefer to the Safety Data Sheet, issued by Arctic on request.

Process. Chambered doctor blade coater inline on a sheet-fed offset press, higher anilox volume, IR and hot air drying

6. Storage and handling

Store in the original closed container at 5 to 30 degrees C, protected from frost and direct heat, and stir gently before use. Shelf life is stated on the label and Certificate of Analysis. Handle and use the product in line with its Safety Data Sheet.

7. Safety and regulatory information

Read the Safety Data Sheet before use. Safety Data Sheets and regulatory declarations are issued by our technical centre against the product and batch supplied, so they are sent on request rather than published. Request a Safety Data Sheet or declaration.
